Take your passion for fitness to the next level with VIU’s Physical Education Diploma program. The program offers active instruction and hands-on learning. You’ll graduate with the skills to work in health, wellness, fitness and performance roles. This includes jobs in municipal parks and recreation programs and in other sports programming. 


The Physical Education Diploma Program

Students interested in the Physical Education Diploma must apply to the Bachelor of Kinesiology. Upon successful completion of the first two years (60 credits), of the Bachelor of Kinesiology, students will be eligible to receive the Physical Education Diploma.

The Physical Education diploma is the first two years of the Bachelor of Kinesiology. The diploma assists students in seeking employment in the health and fitness industry, municipal parks and recreation programs and other sports programming. 

Students must complete 60 semester-credit-hours of coursework with a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.0 (“C”) to be eligible for the diploma. Students who have been awarded advanced credit standing must complete a minimum of 30 semester-credit-hours at VIU, with a Grade Point Average of 2.0 (“C”). Students should be aware that admission to the Bachelor of Kinesiology program does not guarantee registration in all the required courses. *These courses fulfill the Lab/Science requirements for the Education program.
**KIN 203 must be taken in the first year of the program.
***Kinesiology Activity courses are numbered in the 100 level. Two credits each from KIN 203, KIN 222, KIN 270 and KIN 285 may count as activity courses.
****Elective credits can be from any level (100-400) and from any program area.

  • Admission to the Bachelor of Kinesiology is required for entry into the Physical Education Diploma.
  • General admission requirements apply.
  • A minimum grade of "C+" in English 12, or equivalent.
  • A minimum grade of "C+" in Anatomy and Physiology 12, or equivalent. 
  • Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Pre-calculus 11, or equivalent. 

Notes on Admission

  • Enrolment in the Bachelor of Kinesiology is limited. Students who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the program.
  • Application and admission into this Bachelor of Kinesiology program does not guarantee enrolment into any specific courses. Registration into the courses listed is based upon availability and completed course prerequisites.

Graduates of VIU’s Physical Education Diploma program have found employment in: 

  • Numerous health and fitness related industries including:
    • Spas
    • Aerobic/fitness centres
    • Wellness centres
  • Municipal parks and recreation programs including:
    • Summer camps
    • Swimming pools
    • Parks and recreation programs
  • Other sports programming including:
    • Private athletic clubs 
    • Squash and racquetball clubs
    • Sport leadership (coaching, sport camps) 

The field is broad in scope and practice, and opportunities for employment increase greatly for individuals who possess a university credential in Physical Education.

When applying to graduate, students will be charged a non-refundable graduation and alumni fee.

Some courses have additional fees to pay for extraordinary class–related expenses.

The VIUSU Health and Dental Plan fee is assessed for all students enrolled in 6 credits or more per term, or in Trades/Vocational programs of 5 months or longer.  

Textbooks and/or course packages are required for each course. Contact the Education Department at 250.740.6223 for further information regarding books and supplies. 

All fees are subject to change without prior notice and are expected to increase by 2% each year on April 1.
